Living in New York, I'm surrounded by people all the time. It's hard to be physically alone but I can always feel alone anywhere in the city. Being an in unfamiliar area or in crowds of strangers can intensify feelings of loneliness. Crowds was written to express that loneliness but also as a reminder that feelings of loneliness come and go. In times of life we need loneliness to work on ourselves. It also makes the feeling of being with others even better!
